See the Mill River dam where David Lee and Lydia Maria Child processed sugar beets as an alternative to slave-grown sugar cane. Stand in the Pine Grove where William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips spoke before members of the Northampton Association "utopian" community . Hear about David Ruggles' Water Cure and the visits of Frederick Douglass. Donations benefit the David Ruggles Center. Meet at the Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue, 10:00 am, corner of Park and Pine Streets, Florence. at 10:00 am

  Time: 5:00 pm
  Len Gougeon, author of Virtue’s Hero: Emerson, Antislavery and Reform and co-editor of Emerson’s Antislavery Writings will speak on Saturday, October 9 at 5:00 p.m. in the Great Hall at the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence, 220 Main Street, Northampton. Gougeon, who grew up in Florence in what has now been identified as the house of David Ruggles, will explore how the anti-slavery careers of Emerson and Douglass overlapped between 1844 and the Civil War. David Ruggles, the New York and Florence Underground Railroad assistant, factors into the story early on, before his untimely death in 1849. at 5:00 pm
